An eight‐coordinate manganese( II ) ion is found in dication 1 , the first complex between the [2.2.2]cryptand and a transition metal. The O ‐ and N ‐donor centers take up positions at the corners of an almost perfect cube. The formation of this extremely rare coordination polyhedron for Mn II can be attributed to the high structural flexibility of the ligand, which enables it to adjust to very different metal cations.
