The formation and functionalization of monolayers can be studied by means of a quartzcrystal microbalance. This method was used along with ellipsometric and IR‐spectroscopic investigations to prove that a monolayer forms on adsorption of 3‐aminopropyl‐trimethoxysilane (APS) on an aluminum oxide substrate. This surface‐bound APS reacts with gaseous chlorodimethylsilane quantitatively to form an immobilized dimethylsilylammonium salt.
