N 2 O 3 (1) may be described as “nitrosyl nitrite”. Structural investigations with the modified Guinier technique revealed a nearly planar molecule; the nitrite and nitrosyl groups are only slightly twisted (3.7°) about the NN bond. Indications that the structure of N 2 O 5 should be revised were also found. The picture shows the unit cell of 1 .
