The construction of a macrobicycle from three calix[4]arene units as in 2 can be achieved by a double aldol condensation of 1 , a nitromalonaldehyde with a bridging ketone unit. In the crystal the newly formed nitrophenol unit is virtually parallel to one of the nonbridged phenol units; in solution it swings in the cavity of the calix[4]arene A‐B‐C‐D like the clapper of a bell. R = cyclo ‐C 6 H 11 .
