The modeling of systems for the water oxidation center (WOC) in photosynthesis took a step forward with the preparation of the first complex that contains a bound water molecule (see structure to the right). The hydrogen bond between the aqua ligand (o 18) and a carboxylate group might provide insight into how the substrate is bound in the WOC and how deprotonation in the H 2 O oxidation is activated.
