Conjugation in the π and σ systems stabilizes the positive charge in the N‐tert‐ butoxycarbonyl‐4‐dimethylaminopyridinium ion ( 1 ). This follows from the distances and angles in the salt 1 ‐BF 4 determined by X‐ray crystallography. The structural features are also in accord with the easy transfer of Boc by 1 and with the decomposition of Boc into CO 2 and isobutene.
