The catalytic active species in the photoinduced hydrogenation of norbornadiene (NBD) that leads to nortricyclene and norbornene are the complex fragments fac ‐ and mer ‐[Cr(C0) 3 (η 4 ‐nbd)]. This conclusion is drawn from experiments in the dark with the labile ethene complex 1 as catalyst: the product distribution, pressure dependence, and results from labeling experiments correspond to those found for photoinduced catalysis with [Cr(CO) 4 (η 4 ‐nbd)] as starting complex.
