A novel reaction related to the McMurry reaction , the coupling of aromatic aldehydes and ketones according to Equation (a), is found to take place after methylation of the W V complexes 1 with methyllithium. The yields of 2 are 76–90% (five examples); the reaction does not take place with aliphatic aldehydes and ketones.
