A Fe 3 Ni 5 cube with all surfaces capped by sulfur atoms is found in the structure of [Fe 3 Ni 5 S 6 I 8 ] 4⊖ ( 1 ). It forms spontaneously from the hexanuclear cluster ion [Fe 6 S 6 I 6 ] 2⊖ and [NiI 4 ] 2⊖ . The large tendency to form 1 is in agreement with the results of calculations on M 8 S 6 clusters, which predict that such clusters are stable when, as here, they have 110 skeletal electrons.
