The square‐antiprismatic structure of IF   8 ⊖corresponds to that of XeF   8 2⊖ . This shows that the extra lone pair of XeF   8 2⊖is located in a stereochemically inactive orbital. The counterion NO ⊕ (NOF) 2 is a polymer in which the charge‐carrying N atom is surrounded by one O and four F atoms in a square‐pyramidal arrangement.
