The structure of the new LaCuO phase, La 2 Cu 2 O 5 , stable at 1075–1100°C, is characterized by La 2 CuO 4 layers two CuO octahedrons wide which share edges with the CuO polyhedrons of the separating “walls”. This construction led to the postulate that a homologous series (La 2n+2 Cu n+4 O 4n+7 ) exists, and besides La 2 Cu 2 O 5 (n = 2), La 8 Cu 7 O 19 (n = 3) has already been prepared and characterized structurally.
