The nitrogen analogue of molecular P 4 O 10 is contained in Li 10 P 4 N 10 as the new P 4 N 10 10−ion 1. The packing of the complex units in the solid is significantly more compact than in phosphorus(v) oxide. This can be attributed to the ionic structure, which, surprisingly, is derived from the cubic As 4 O 6 structure. The title compound is synthesized by solid‐state reactions of binary nitrides.
