Neither In 3 Cl 4 nor In 4 Cl 5 accurately defines a phase whose existence was predicted by thermoanalytic methods. In fact a more apt formula is In 7 Cl 9 , for the phase which is prepared from InCl/InCl 3 mixtures by sintering for 14 days at 220–250°C. The structure of the compound (part of which is shown on the right—In: small circles; Cl: large circles) reveals interesting crystallographic relationships to that of α‐InCl and is important in the discussion on stereochemical activity of cations with ns 2 configuration.
