Se 4 N 2 , which, apart from the highly explosive Se 4 N 4 , is the only binary selenium nitride, is stable to 80°C and therefore of preparative interest. Se 4 N 2 can be obtained according to Equation (a) as a finely crystalline, black powder in nearly quantitative yield. On exposure to moist air, it is slowly hydrolyzed to red Se 8 and NH 4 HSeO 3 .
