An unprecedented Au 5 chain 3 , in which the most likely distribution of oxidation states is Au II Au II Au I Au II Au II , forms unexpectedly from the gold complexes 1 and 2 according to the equation (a). All gold atoms of the cation of 3 have square‐planar coordination. R = C 6 F 5 .
