The [Al 12 t BU 12 ] 2⊖ ion , which corresponds to B 12 H 12 2⊖ , can be extracted as the K 2 salt in low yield into toluene from the hexane‐insoluble products of the reaction of chlorodiiso‐butylaluminum with potassium. It crystallizes in the form of dark red octahedra and has an icosahedral Al 12 framework. (The view on the right shows a part structure.)
