A spontaneous reduction of Cu II to Cu I takes place when CuBr 2 is allowed to react with the tridentate SN 2 ligand ddtp in boiling ethanol/ acetone. The Cu 4 title complex obtained contains thioether bridges with large Cu‐S distances and Cu‐S‐Cu angles (160.6°!). The Cu 2 Cu 2 rectangular structure is without precedent for Cu I complexes. [Cu 4 (ddtp) 2 Br 4 ] can serve as reference compound for EXAFS studies on blue copper‐proteins.
