Pale green single crystals of VF 4 have been prepared for the first time: by treatment of pure vanadium powder with elemental fluorine in a monel autoclave. The unit cell of VF 4 is monoclinic (space group P 2 1 / c ), and the structure of the material is related to that of SnF 4 . As in the latter, there are distinct layers of octahedra joined at their vertices, corresponding to ∞ 2 [V /2 F 2/1 ] and incorporating trans terminal F ⊖ ions. Unlike SnF 4 , however, the layers are not planar, instead displaying undulations.
