Cyano(ethynyl)ethenes represents a cross between the familiar tetracyanoethylene 1 and the still unknown tetraethinylethene 3 . The unsubstituted parent system 2 remains elusive, but syntheses have now been developed for two new planar π‐systems of this general type, the compounds 4 and 5 .
