Gel permeation chromatography is the key to isolation of pure TPPTS 1 , as well as the complexes [L X M y (TPPTS) z · (H 2 O) 3z ], for which 1 serves as starting material. These complexes are of considerable interest with respect to homogeneous catalysis, since their water solubility permits them to be separated easily from hydrophobic organic reaction products. Charge concentration around the periphery of the molecule is presumably responsible for the fact that TPPTS complexes such as 2 often display lower coordination numbers than their triphenylphosphane analogues.
