The first detailed structural information on the intermediate of a Grob fragmentation is provided by iminium ion 1 , which was obtained from a dimethylaminoadamantane derivative. The pyramidalization of the tertiary C atoms of the C C and C N bonds may be interpreted in terms of a nucleophilic‐electrophilic interaction.
