The ab initio calculation of an energy minimum for NCl 4 ⊕provided the incentive for attempting the synthesis of the title compound by oxidative chlorination of NC1 3 [Eq. (a)]. The salt thereby obtained is stable below −40°C and, unlike NCl 3 nonexplosive. The valence force constant of NCl 4 ⊕determined from the vibrational spectrum is ca. 15% smaller than that of CCl 4 . This finding may be ascribed to the increased ligand repulsion in the NCl 4 ⊕ion.
