Only van der Waals forces are responsible for joining the two‐dimensional Se‐Ta‐Ta‐Ta‐Ta‐Se units in crystalline Ta 2 Se. This selenide, which has the highest tantalum content known, is prepared by reduction of molten TaSe 2 with tantalum. Its structure (shown in the picture to the right) is symmetrically related to the body‐centered cubic structure of the pure metal.
