What cannot be accomplished in solution is readily achieved in the gas phase by “charge‐stripping” mass spectrometry: generation of dications from radical cations of acyclic thioethers (e.g., 1 → 2 ). Ionization energies for the oxidation are in good agreement with the predictions of qualitative MO treatments of the bonding in three‐electron two‐center radical cations.
