Although the X‐ray Crystal structure analysis indicated an equilateral Cr   III 3triangle in the complex cation 1 of [Cr 3 O(O 2 CCH 3 ) 6 (OH 2 ) 3 ]Cl · 5 H 2 O, spectroscopic findings and magnetic parameters are consistent with a distortion of the symmetry. The symmetry lowering should result in a splitting of the electronic ground state into two levels, a presumption which has already long been discussed for such systems and has now been demonstrated directly for the first time by inelastic neutron scattering.
