The fifth [2.2]cyclophane to be isolated—after o,o ‐, m,m ‐, p,p ‐, and m,p ‐cyclophane—is the o,m isomer 1 . Only the o,p compound is absent in this series of strained arenes. The barrier for the transformation of syn ‐ 1 to anti ‐ 1 (see below) presumably lies between 20 and 24 kcal mol −1 .
