The specific hydrolysis of D ‐amino acid amides and the stereospecifc synthesis of peptides with D ‐alanine‐ N ‐alkylamide residues is made possible by a new aminopeptidase isolated in pure form from cell extracts of Achromobacter sp. SCRC C1‐38. This enzyme, called D ‐alanine aminopeptidase, has a molecular weight of about 122 000 and consists of two identical subunits.
