Na x Mg 5− x Ga 9 crystallizes in a new structure type in which the Ga atoms form a three‐dimensional framework of linked icosahedra and Friauf polyhedra. These two types of polyhedra are typical for intermetallic phases. The compound shows a considerable phase width. The structure determination gives indications that, despite the metallic properties, variable electron numbers cause local changes of the chemical bonding which only take place at a single terminally bound Ga atom.
