Cocondensation of FeCI 2 and FeBr 2 with CO/Ar leads either to species of the composition FeX 2 ·n CO, whose v co stretching vibration is of higher frequency than that of free CO, or to the hitherto unknown complexes trans ‐[Fe(CO) 4 X 2 ], X = CI, Br. In the case of FeI 2 , only trans ‐[Fe(CO) 4 I 2 ] has been detected, and in the case of FeF 2 exclusively FeF 2 ·n CO adducts are formed, even with pure CO at 35 K. These findings are of significance for an understanding of sorption phenomena.
