A PSn 2 C ring containing a PC double bond is formed in the title reaction. Compound 1 is the first phosphadistannacyclobutene. The alternative formation via successive addition of two R 2 Sn units, formed in the equilibrium R 2 Sn = SnR 2 ⇄2R 2 Sn, is unlikely, since an intermediate containing a PSnC ring could not be detected.
