Compounds with cyclohexenetrione terminal groups have been discussed as reactive intermediates of the biogenesis of norcarotinoids for some twenty years. It has now been possible for the first time to investigate the chemical and spectroscopic properties of this terminal group with the aid of the title compound 1 as model substance. The triketone 1 can be prepared from both the cyclohexanedione 2 as well as from the cyclopentenedione 3 ; it forms sticky deep‐red crystals, which immediately deliquesce upon exposure to air to form the hydrate.
