The N ‐protected amino acids 1 and 2 should find universal application ; they are now accessible in good to very good yields. The allyl group has proven to be the best protecting group for the carboxy function. The preparative use of 1 and 2 has been demonstrated by the synthesis of some dipeptides related to Leu‐enkephalin.
