Tetracyclic cage compounds 3 are surprisingly formed from 1 and the phosphaalkyne 2 (molar ratio 1 : 2) in the title reaction. 1 is known to react with alkynes via the unstable heterobarrelenes to give phosphinines. If 2 were to behave here like an alkyne then it would form 1,3‐diphosphinines with 1 .
