The interplay of two Cu‐O vibrations in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 could–at least‐qualitatively–not only explain the surprisingly high critical temperature of this material but also the sensitivity of the critical temperature towards magnetic fields and 16 O/ 18 O isotopic exchange. Important is a linear arrangement of metal atoms in two oxidation states (e.g. Cu II /Cu III ), in'which two coordinated lattice vibrations lead to (directed) electron hopping.
