The yellow crystalline solid 3 is formed upon elimination of Me 3 SiCl from 1, and a 1‐azatriphosphabutadiene and a 1,2‐dihydro‐l‐azatriphosphete are presumably formed as intermediates. According to an X‐ray structure'analysis 3 has long P 1 P 2 and P 5 P 6 bands, thus explaining the relative ease of decomposition into P 4 and 2 in solution.
