Transmission electron spectroscopic investigations of thin layers of AuSn on single‐crystal Au foils–prepared by dipping the foils for varying lengths of time into ethylenediamine solutions of K 4 Sn 9 –demonstrated epitaxial growth of AuSn crystallites. It has been known for a long time that Sn   9 40ions immediately attack gold, but this is the first close characterization of the surface species formed.
