Both title compounds are polymers with layers consisting of 32‐membered rings having the composition C 8 N 8 O 8 Hg 4 Cu 4 , They are obtained by heating Hg(OAc) 2 , 2‐pyrrolidone, and Cu(NO 3 ) 2 or Cu(ClO 4 ) 2 in methanol. The counterions are decisive for maintaining the structure within the corrugated layers. The O atom of an NO   3 ⊖occupies an apical site of Cu; the two other O atoms form an HgONOHg bridge. ClO   4 ⊖ , on the other hand, forms only a CuOClOHg bridge.
