The acrobatic act using a spring‐board to form a delicately balanced three man formation is formally similar to the approach used to generate radicals such as CIIF in molecular beam experiments. Exactly the right amount of kinetic energy, which can be specified very precisely, is converted into potential energy in an endothermic reaction. The stability of a number of sensitive radicals could be determined in this way. Further details on this approach and on other aspects of the crossed molecular beam method for the investigation of elementary chemical processes are discussed by Y. T. Lee in his Nobel Lecture on p. 939ff.
