The biphenylenes with the hitherto shortest bridge in the 1,8‐position , the sulfur compounds 1a and 1b , could be prepared for the first time in a one‐step reaction. X‐ray structure analyses and calculations both indicate a severe trapezoidaldistartion of the four‐membered ring; C4a–C4b is ca.155 pm, C8–C8b only ca. 146 pm in length! The biphenylene skeleton remains completely planar ( 1a , X = 1b X = SO 2 ).
