The cover shows an alfalfa callus (white) developing somatic embryos (green) (magnification 10 ×). These embryos or shoots can grow into complete plants. Only when this shoot regeneration from callus cultures succeeds can transgenic plants be produced by the usual methods. The current status of genetic engineering with plants, the aims it aspires to, and the dangers which probably will have to be encountered are summarized by F. Wangenmeyer et al. in a review on p. 382.
