Instead of η 6 coordination to the outer side of cyclophanes, η 2 or η 2 /η 3 coordination has been found for the complexes 1 and 2 of the coingage metals Cu 1 and Ag 1 , respectively. In their crystal structures, each metal center bridges two cyclophane molecules. However, on account of the differing coordination of the counterion, screwlike chains are formed for 1 , whereas layers are formed for 2. Upon exposure to air, compound 1 discolors and becomes electrically conducting.
