The cover page shows the structure of phospholipase A 2 from bovine pancreas. Especially highlighted are the His‐48 (blue) and the calcium ion (red), which is essential for the activity. The loop highlighted by yellow‐dotted spheres has special properties; depending upon the phospholipase, it is either disordered or adopts a conformation that is quite different from that of the bovine enzyme. The intracellular, Ca 2+ ‐dependent phospholipase A 2 catalyzes the synthesis of arachidonic acid, which is a precursor for prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes—mediators of anaphylactic reactions and inflammations. The development of inhibitors for this phospholipase is therefore one of the aims of current pharmacological research. New methods of drug design are reported on by W. G. J. Hol on p. 767.
