The title reaction provides a novel and versatile entry to metallacyclobutabenzene compounds. The products 2 could be characterized both spectroscopically as well as by their reactivity. Thus, when L = n Bu 3 P the reaction with CO 2 leads via ring expansion to 3 , the hydrolysis product of which was identified as o ‐methylbenzoic acid.
