The replacement of both methylene H atoms of a methylenephosphorane by transition—metal atoms has been achieved by reaction of TiCl 4 with the phosphorus ylide (Et 2 N) 3 PCH 2 . Violet crystals of the dititanium cyclobutane 1 are formed in over 70% yield; 1 is expected to exhibit interesting chemical properties. The markedly short Ti‐C distances are characteristic of the centrosymmetric molecular structure.
