A reversible 1,5‐electrocyclization is the basis of the photochemistry of the systems 1 and 3 . The corresponding betaines 2 and 4 , which were also precursors in the syntheses of 1 and 3 , respectively, are intense deep red to violet (ECO 2 Me).
