A quantitative separation of calcium and strontium is made possible by the reaction of M(O t Bu) 2 (M Sr, Ca) with [Sn(O t Bu) 2 ] 2 in benzene (!). The strontium salt dissolves quantitatively; the calcium salt is insoluble. In the process, the polycycle shown on the right is formed; it is even soluble in hexane and its structure is reminiscent of that of SrO.
