A gold‐nitrogen cluster Au 4 N 12 is present in the title compound (phenyl groups not shown). It contains a rhombus of four Au + ions which are bridged alternately above and below the Au 4 plane by four bidentate diphenyltriazenido ligands. The compound can be obtained from AuI and Na(PhN 3 Ph) in liquid ammonia.
