α‐Amino phosphonic acids, analogues of α‐amino carboxylic acids , are of interest because of their potential biological activity. The title reaction makes possible the preparation of (easily separated) diastereomers, which can be saponified to give penicillamine analogues (RC(CH 3 ) 2 OCH 3 ).
