The ReO 3 group is retained during the [3+2] cycloaddition of diphenylketene to the trioxorhenium( VII ) compound 1 ; the metallacycle 2 precipitates in the form of violet crystals. The reaction could be of use for the oxidation of CC multiple bond systems (R = C 6 H 5 ).
