A new application of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry is the investigation of the proton exchange reaction in the collision complexes formed between simple arenium ions and arenes. Only for degenerate reactions (R R′) is a (surprisingly slow) exchange process observed (R R′ H or CH 3 ; R H, R′ CH 3 ).
